Serendipity -- Today's Other Word of the Day

So, yesterday, I received an email from Ms. Aguila by way of Ms. Prado. The message was about Operation Hope Tote...

"Did you know that November is National Homeless Awareness Month? Hialeah Gardens Key Club, with the help of The Miami Rescue Mission is trying to get the word out. Our mission is to reach out to the less fortunate citizens of our community and inspire hope with human compassion.

Our goal is to provide basic, personal hygiene items to thousands of needy men, women, and children in our communities starting this Thanksgiving and winter season. Surplus items will help us help others throughout the year. Last year over 200,000 showers were provided to the homeless and needy.

Hope Totes are purple bags that you can fill with needed items. Such as:

Toothpaste   Toothbrush   Soap   Shampoo   Deodorant   New Underwear  New Socks  Diapers   Baby Wipes  Sanitary Napkins  Lotion, etc.

If you and your class are interested in helping Hialeah Gardens Key Club and the Miami Rescue Mission, please reply..."

So, of course, I replied, volunteering the students in my classes to help in this worthy endeavor. We started working this morning in 2nd and 4th periods.

In second period a discussion was sparked by the prospect of collecting the items mentioned and giving them to people who are homeless. What seemed typical generalizations were bandied about -- if we just keep giving them stuff they will never get off the streets // they like living on the streets // they don't want to work ...

I knew that the students were responding to what they see and hear around them. I know they were not being mean or thoughtless -- they were reacting to what they know - or perhaps they were reacting to what they think they know about hunger and homelessness in our communities, in our country and our world.

Gently, I urged the students to consider a high school student, maybe even a peer or classmate, being kicked out of his or her home; a woman with children running away from an abusive home life; a war veteran losing his family, home, job stateside because of an extended absence from home... what are the numbers? What are the statistics? Who are these homeless? These people who find themselves without permanent shelter, without resources, money, food...

We had Cathryn Berger Kaye's A Kid's Guide to Hunger and Homelessness: How to Take Action, so the students started to look through the book.

One student in 4th period pointed out the part about Making History: The Full Belly Project (page 21). We didn't really go into it, but the funny title stuck in my mind.

Later on, driving home, I am listening to NPR. Practically the first thing I hear is someone talking about the Full Belly Project. So, of course, I listen -- and when I get home, I read the full article in the book, and I find the NPR piece online -- and here it is -- the story on NPR -- and about serendipity - we are supposed to be working to help the people in our community who are dealing with hunger and homelessness...

HGHS Alma Mater

Hialeah Gardens High School Alma Mater

Gladiators, we stand tall
To show our strength in front of all
Before you, we stand brave and wise
Our swords held high, up towards the skies

For justice and honor we hold our shield
To defend against the swords they wield
Our Alma Mater: silver, black, and green
The Gladiators will live their dreams

Students who are doing vocabulary stories for other teachers, may create and submit a "wordle" visual in place of the vocabulary story. One wordle is required for each Word of the Day. When one or more vocabulary words are synonyms or are related to one another, the student may create one wordle that incorporates the related words.

Here are some sturdent wordle creations:
